45 Josh's 5 Essential Board Games (guest post)

Hey, guys! It's Josh, Kelli's husband. She told me I could write a guest post on her blog this week. Nice to meet you. Expect to hear from me from time to time!

I am a huge fan of board games. We try out a new board game every chance we get - it's one of my favorite ways to fellowship with friends and family. I have always loved the way a good board game creates so many “Oh man, remember that game when...” conversations- months, or even years, later.

It has come to my attention in the last couple of years that there are a lot more board games available than simply what Wal-Mart or Target happen to carry. The following list is for those of you who may be interested in discovering board games that go a little deeper than titles like Clue, or The Game of Life, or Monopoly (All great games, mind you!)- but may not be quite sure where to start. Here are five essential board games that every household ought to own (in no particular order).

PANDEMIC
source
OVERVIEW:
This game falls into a category of board games that you may not be aware exists- cooperative. Everyone playing Pandemic wins or loses together- you are all trying to beat the board. Four deadly viruses are spreading across the globe, and it is up to you and your teammates to treat the ill and discover cures before the world succumbs to the pandemic. Each member of the team has a specific role to play in fighting the viruses, and everyone must work together in order to have a chance at victory.

WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL:
This is some of the most fun you will have playing a board game, hands down. It works so well because the theme is so rich. The tension builds as more and more cities become infected, creating chain reactions of outbreaks that become increasingly difficult to treat- all this while also trying to discover cures in order to win the game.

We have played this one countless times and have only beaten the virus once- but we keep coming back for more. My brother Jordan isn't much of a board game player, but he jumps at the chance to play Pandemic because it trades competitive strategy and cutthroat moves for cooperation. Everyone playing is looking for the same outcome, and even when you lose, the journey makes it well worth the effort.

SETTLERS OF CATAN

OVERVIEW:
In Settlers of Catan, players attempt to collect resources in order to stake their claim on the small island of Catan. You build settlements, cities, and roads along the way in an effort to collect ten victory points and claim victory. Along the way, you will need to trade precious resources with other players while trying to ensure you are not harming yourself by helping your competition. Which settler will be be the first to ten victory points on the island of Catan?

WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL:
Catan is one of the most popular and influential board games of the last couple of decades. If you only play one game on this list, play Catan. This is the game that rekindled my love for board games. It is not the deepest or most strategic game to ever come along, but it is one of the best all-around board games to ever be produced. It has a little of everything- resource management, trading/cooperation, road building, etc. The individual resource hexes that make up the game board are arranged randomly every game- ensuring that each trip to Catan is never the same as the last. If you have not played Catan, play Catan.

THE RESISTANCE

OVERVIEW:
Are you a spy or a member of the Resistance? That is the question you will be asking of your fellow players over and over again as you play Resistance. The job for the Resistance is simple- go on missions and complete them successfully. But spies are lying in wait, gaining trust and hoping to be placed on missions in order to sabotage the Resistance. Will the Resistance successfully complete three missions to win, or will the spies thwart the Resistance's efforts three times in order to ensure their own victory?

WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL:
This is one of my absolute favorite games, and I try to get a round going every chance I get. I love games with intrigue and shifting loyalties- games wherein you are never sure exactly who you can trust. This game has all of that in spades. It is open enough that you can play with custom variants to the rules or perhaps even customized roles. This is a quick-playing game that's over almost as quick as it starts, and one round is never enough.

ULTIMATE WEREWOLF

OVERVIEW:
Will you survive the lynching? This game transforms an otherwise friendly group of friends into an angry mob, as everyone tries to discover who among them is not who they say they are. Everyone claims to be an innocent bystander, but there are werewolves present- and the sooner the villagers can discover who they are, the better.

WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL:
You do not need to purchase Ultimate Werewolf to play this game- in fact, a lot of people grew up calling it “Mafia,” and played it with a deck of regular playing cards. I know I did! But this set of character cards is so fun, it warrants a purchase. Suffice it to say, there are many other roles to play other than villagers and werewolves- too many to list here (It's expandable up to sixty-eight players.). If you enjoy “Mafia,” pick up Ultimate Werewolf. This is how the game was meant to be played.

TICKET TO RIDE

OVERVIEW:
This game is all about building railways to various populous cities across America. Can you build the longest? Can you connect all of your Destination Cards for extra points at the end of the game, or be forced to deduct that same number of points?

WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL:
Ticket to Ride is an incredibly simple game to learn, and an absolute blast to play. Like Catan, it functions as a gateway game that may lead you to deeper and more strategic games later. Of all of the titles on this list, this one probably has the biggest “Let's play that again” factor. It is one of the most successful board games of the last few years for a reason.

That's my list! What about you guys? Which board games are essential to your game nights?

  1. Love it!!! I have not played any of these, but I now want to find Pandemic and the Resistance somewhere!

My favorite board game is probably Monopoly; we have the Star Wars Trilogy version of Monopoly, which is extra score since I and my family love the Original Star Wars movies. :) We also like Scotland Yard, Spy Alley, and Samurai.

  2. Favorite board games: The classics like Monopoly, Life, Risk. Kingmaker is hard to find but an awesome game. Very long though. Diplomacy is a fun one for deal making and breaking.

  5. CATAN!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 You seriously get the "Coolest Blog Post by a Husband Award" just because that game is on the list. Should we ever get the pleasure of meeting in person, I propose a couple's game of Catan. Winner gets a raspberry from Isaiah. :)

  6. I really enjoyed this, Josh. My family doesn't play board games very much but we are starting to do it more. This is defiantly very helpful for future Christmas gift ideas and new games we could learn. Thanks!

  7. We have a 3 year old night owl, so most of the games we play are for preschoolers. Of those, we really like Hoot Owl Hoot, which is a cooperative game. It's set up a little like Candyland, except that you always have 3 color cards in front of you to choose from, and you can move any owl on your turn, and aren't assigned to one. There are also "sun" cards mixed in and you need to get all 6 owls home before you draw too many sun cards, and it's daytime.
We also really like Hisss which is a simple color matching snake making tile game. We've stayed up to play that without our preschooler. :)
When we get together with friends, we play Killer Bunnies (and the quest for the magic carrot)! The back of the box reads
" Killer Bunnies is a fast paced, action filled card game, in which you must try to keep as many Bunnies alive as possible, while eliminating your opponents' Bunnies. The problem: Your opponents are armed with weapons and will stop at nothing to keep you from winning the game which can get dreadfully vengeful, horribly nasty, hilariously messy, and just plain fun! Can you keep from being attacked by the whimsical Whisk or the torching Flame Thrower? Defend your Bunnies with the Magic Spatula, or use a Feed The Bunny card to starve out an opponent! It's off-the-wall strategic fun, where the goal is to survive and claim the Magic Carrot to win the game!" One of the great things is that no one knows which carrot is the right one, until the very end, so the veteran player with 8 bunnies and 9 carrots at the end, might lose to the first time player with 1 bunny, and 1 carrot.
We also bring out Killer Bunnies and the Journey to Jupiter with our friends that already play Bunnies. It additionally involves rocket ships, and an outer space playing board with moving planets!
We'll have to look into The Resistance, and Pandemic! All our friends play Catan. It's probably time we learned. :)

    1. My wife and younger son love killer bunnies, with its variants. They have even created their own cards! Catan is a good game, too. I tend to go for traditional games like Backgammon, Chess, and Risk myself. I also liked Feudal. No one else will play with me, though. :(

  8. Awesome post! :) The only game I've played from that list is Catan - maybe I should look into the others! They all look very cool...now I want to go play board games.

  10. My favorite is Bezzerwizzer, a trivia game. There are so many different catagories, and I learn something new every time!

  11. I think I need to buy Pandemic game now!

I love the idea that I can work with others as opposed to the "cutthroat" style you mentioned. I'm a bit too competitive and usually don't even enjoy victory.

  12. I love Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan! I can't wait to try some of these other ones...
A game you should try is called Killer Bunnies.. its pretty addicting(:

  13. You have Dominion in the first picture but not on the list! Why?!? Dominion is one of my favorite games ever!! My friends and I used to play it every Wednesday night but then school started and we couldn't anymore (it's very sad). Do you have the Prosperity expansion pack for it?
I really want to play Pandemic. One of my friends owns it and tells me about it all the time but we have never gotten around to playing it.
The Resistance sounds like a great game. I will have to try it sometime.

  14. I am honestly really surprised that I've only played one of these (Catan). I need to find and buy the rest; especially Pandemic, thats the only other one I've heard of

  15. I love love love Ticket to Ride, or as we call it here in Germany, Zug um Zum. It's all I played with my family this summer when I visited America. We have all the maps, too - Switzerland, Asia, India, Germany, USA, Europe. SO MUCH FUN. Also, Dominion should be on this list, too. :)

  16. Ooo, The Resistance sounds fun! We really love Killer Bunnies too. And another game called Bang. It's almost like Mafia, but with a Western theme. Much fun! My husband is really a lot like you, Josh. He follows a gaming pod cast/video site called The Dice Tower. Have you heard of it? With Tom Vassel. He does reviews on board games...he's very informative. We love watching his videos as a family! Awesome post! I'll have to bring up The Resistance to my hubs.

    1. haha! I watch Dice Tower reviews every day! ;) I actually got in contact with Tom JUST before our homeschool video took off and Blimey cow started taking up all my time... we were n preliminary talks to make me a reviewer for the channel! I keep meaning to get back in touch with him because I'd love to do it, I'm just so busy now :/

But anyways, Tom Vassel is awesome. He's a good Christian guy- he's a youth pastor at his church AND homeschools his kids! Pretty neat.

PS: We're going to play Bang Tuesday night for the first time! Can't wait.

  17. My family's favorite game is a card game called Dutch Blitz. It can be played with regular cards (other names include Peanuts and Nertz), but it's just not the same without the adorable Dutch children on the cards, and the wagon, pail, pump, and plow on the decks of cards! Ve luf it--it is a "very goot game."

    1. Love Dutch Blitz! I have also heard it called "Friendzy" but I remember there was a time when my family played that game almost every night! :D

  18. Hi Josh!

I'm commenting on this in the hopes that you might write back :-) I just wanted to let you know how much I love all of your Messy Mondays videos (and I'm going down the list of old Blimeycow videos now) My sister and I also love making movies and we've made over 60 various home movies since 2006 ranging from fairy tale spoofs to Star wars skits to horse jumping competitions to our latest video "Romeo and Juliet in 120 seconds" :-D I recently just won a video contest and I'm looking to upgrade some equipment and break into the young christian film-making world. I wanted to ask what kind of camera do you have? I'm looking into maybe some kind of DSLR. Are those any good for video? Another one of my pet peeves is sound quality. What kind of shotgun mic do you use for your videos? The Messy Mondays videos that you guys are producing now are just absolutely terrific quality, so I decided to ask you guys what you use. Sorry to pester you with all these questions, but I'm a hopeful film-maker with a daunting road ahead of me, and looking for a little advice! :-) Thank you so much! Hope to hear back from you soon!

    --Noah

P.S. YOLO is the best Blimeycow character. Ever. :-)

    2. Hey Josh,

I actually don't have a facebook - I'm one of those people that tries their very hardest not to "go-with-the-flow" so it's kind of like my personal goal not to get on Facebook. Yes, I know i'm crazy! Do you have a Blimeycow e-mail or anything I could write to you there?

      Thanks,
      Noah
