Revamp Budget
Thankfully, our vacation money is already set aside, so my lack of budgeting last month won't put us in any jeopardy there. But this does need to be a priority because like I mentioned last month, our quarterly taxes went up - I haven't yet accounted for that change in our budget, so we're saving a lot less each month than we'd like.
Very clean. I didn't do such a great job of this last month, and boy is my body letting me know that. I feel like I'm on some sort of pendulum, going between two extremes. I wish I were more disciplined!
Healthy Travel
This includes healthy food choices and sufficient preparation so I'm not rushing at the last minute. Road trips can be stressful for me. Since I have Crohn's disease, if I don't plan ahead in my food choices, I'll get sick on carb-heavy, sugar-heavy, heavily-processed fast/travel food. I'm also triggered by stress and lack of sleep, so I have to be extra intentional about all of these things. I know it can be done :) It just takes a lot of planning.
Get Back Into a Blogging Rhythm
I'm not going to give myself a number of posts per week like I have in the past, because that tends to overwhelm me (I've found that I try to reach that number with BIG, time-consuming posts). I'd like to start doing more off-the-cuff blogging between my bigger posts, so we'll give it a try and see how it fits.
Does anyone else struggle with eating clean/healthy traveling? I'd appreciate any and all tips!
Yesterday, we shared our July Report Cards, so it just makes sense that we should share our goals for August, too. That means another link party today! It's easy - just write up a quick post about the things you'd like to accomplish in August. It doesn't have to be anything crazy - this is just a motivational tool to keep us accountable in our goals. (I forgot to mention this yesterday, but I would appreciate it if you would include a text-link back to She Learns As She Goes in your submitted blog post.) Once you're finished, come back here and add yours to the list by clicking on the blue "Add your link" button at the end of this post. Please be sure to link to your post (not your blog's home page). This link-party will be open for a week (closes August 8th at 11:59 PM CST).
Finally, make sure you visit the other links and leave encouraging comments! :)
Yeees I struggle with that! I have IBS and if I don't eat healthy I feel like I'm about to kill over any second lol. For snacks on road trips, I usually try to make a trip to the Natural grocery store and stock up on their organic gluten free crackers and on healthy snacks like fruits and veggies, plus lots of carbonated drinks, an exception for me for roadtrips! (the Izze drinks are my favorite!)
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading other tips and if you learn of any during August!
I know the feeling! Thanks for the tips. Our local Kroger has a pretty good Natural foods section and I do plan to take advantage of it. As for the Izzes.. YUM!
DeleteMaybe I can put together a post of all the tips and tricks I learn for healthy traveling.
Bring a cooler and pack pre-cut veggies (red bell peppers and cucumbers are great for snacking), fresh fruit, nuts, rice cakes, & lots of water. For meals, salads are usually safe at places like subway. I have food allergies that include wheat, corn, potato, msg, lentils, celery, strawberries, need I go on? Some fast food places are more sensitive to allergies like taco bell (http://www.tacobell.com/nutrition/allergens). It doesn't mean that there aren't other horrible things in their food (modified food starch, etc), but if you are triggered by some of the big ones, gluten and msg are the two I look out for first I can. Wendy's is really good about listing all the ingredients in their food. You can do some research for your particular triggers and maybe map out a few stops. FYI: Taco Cabana & Chipotle both use msg and aren't up front about it. [sadface] Sometimes there are crazy ingredients that you have to look for. At Freebirds, they don't use MSG, but their salsa has wheat in it. Order the pico de gallo instead. Anyway, the way to stay healthy and not starve is plan ahead. Know where you'll be, find places you might stop and figure out if they can feed you safely. I tend to stick with beans & rice, veggies and salads when I'm out, because they are usually clean (unless they put MSG in them...grr.) Breakfast...besides eggs, there's not much in restaurants and sometimes they aren't safe...(IHOP puts pancake batter in their omelets). I suggest bringing your own oatmeal kits. Pre-measure all the dry goodies, put them in snack baggies, and pack a couple microwave-safe bowls with lids and a measuring cup for water. If you're in a hotel they'll have a microwave in the continental breakfast bar area. Most convenience stores have microwaves too. Just buy coffee from them and smile sweetly and they'll probably let you use it, even if you're not buying a frozen burrito from them. If you're camping, you could do a whole lot more with all your meals. Have a safe and fun trip. I enjoy reading your posts. :-)
DeleteGreat resolutions, Kelli! I should start doing this, too. I bet it'd help me stay on track better.
ReplyDeleteLove the song you linked to. Ryan Adams is such a wonderful musician. "Come Pick Me Up" is still one of my all-time favorite songs to drive to.
You should! It's been pretty helpful this year (well, except last month haha).
DeleteRyan Adams is amazing. He writes some of the most beautiful songs.. He's definitely a favorite around here!
I totally get the swinging between two extremes! Often I'll eat super clean for awhile, then I'll splurge and after that I get in the mindset of "well I already ruined my clean streak, so It won't matter to just eat this. I'll eat healthier tomorrow" HA! It seems hard to indulge and then just get right back on the healthy stuff. Glad you are back to blogging Kelli! I missed you:)
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how I feel once I've messed up. I'm trying to learn a healthier view of splurging.. they shouldn't be end of a clean streak. Thanks!
DeleteThe last time Alex and I traveled, we ate fast food almost the entire time. The only thing that has helped in the past is bring a cooler with snacks in it already-my family did this before because it saves TONS of money, but looking back, we also ate healthier too! I'll have to remember that the next time Alex and I go on a trip!
ReplyDeleteYes, cooler traveling is something I learned from the Taylors! Growing up, my family would bring a small bag of snacks, but otherwise lived off of fast food during road trips.. so it's all pretty new to me! I've got some ideas. I'm looking forward to seeing how well they work :)
DeleteSuper cute blog! I love it.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to incorporate any of your goals into my own "resolution" system for the month, which I'm not ready to commit to doing, I'd agree with the clean eating and the blogging frequency ones! I'm corn intolerant/allergic, so all packaged stuff is out. In addition I'm finding gluteny-goodness carbs are weighing me down, so I'm trying to reduce those in my overall diet. Problem is, those bad for me things are what I crave. As far as blogging, I think I want to do it, but then I procrastinate on the prep work required! So at halfway through the month, I'm not committing to anything, but I'll keep those non-goals in mind. ;)
