Every month, I set five or six public goals and share my progress with you guys to keep myself accountable. At the end of the month, I evaluate those goals and grade my work. Let's see how I did with my April resolutions:
Get More Sun | B
I did really well the first week and a half - I got outside every morning for at least fifteen minutes. Then for a couple weeks I was getting out 2 or 3x a week. This past week, I haven't intentionally gone out just to get sun at all (though I did get a good amount of sun during other activities, so I think it all balanced out). I recently learned that Vitamin D is crucial for chronic autoimmune diseases, so this is one monthly resolution that I don't want to just forget about once the month is over.
Organize the Laundry Room | A+
I think the before and after pictures speak for themselves! This room feels soooo much better now that it's organized. It's a very small space, and when it was cluttered it felt even smaller. Now that everything is organized, it doesn't feel quite so claustrophobic.
I even made some motivational art for the room:
Keep Eating Healthy | C+
We did pretty good for the first half of the month, but we fell off the wagon pretty abruptly when we started snacking again. I don't know what it is, but truly healthy snacks are just not as appealing as the unhealthy ones. They're easier. They're tastier. They're terrible. So. I've gotta get some hummus and celery back in this house, and we've got to be better about out-of-the-house snacking. But I have to say, we're still eating way better than we were before the cleanse in March. I've had a green smoothie almost every day this month! We're just not exactly where we want to be when it comes to eating a majority of whole, nutritive foods.
Organize Important Documents | C
I organized the files we have (and tracked down a few documents that weren't in the right places) but I didn't go get my name changed with Social Securities. I don't know why I have such a mental hang-up about going and getting this done! All my married friends have only told me how easy it was for them. I just dread the lines and paperwork and government buildings, I suppose.
Organize Computer Storage | A
Really the biggest benefit I've gotten from this exercise is that I've figured out a system to be more disciplined on Pinterest.. and also in my photo filing on the computer. This doesn't really affect anyone but myself, but it's nice to have those things organized for me.
Overall Grade | C+
I think I overwhelmed myself by setting too many "big" goals. I'm going to take a break from the big organization goals this next month, and instead focus on some "basics" that fell by the wayside when I got overwhelmed (I tend to shut down and procrastinate like mad when I feel like there's too much to do). So don't be too surprised if tomorrow's list of May Resolutions is a lot of really basic things.

Super Secret Project: Write One Letter Every Day | F
Well, there it is. My first failed monthly resolution. The plan was to write one letter every day (I got the idea from this pin). I know that getting snail mail is extra special these days, so I wanted to love on the people around me. I did pretty well for the first week (are you seeing a pattern here?), but in the end I only wrote eleven letters, and I haven't even mailed half of them yet. Oh well! It was a good idea, just poorly executed. Maybe I'll revisit this one again sometime.

Sometimes the basic things help to keep me motivated to get other things done...
ReplyDeleteMe too! That's why I'm gonna try to get my focus back on them.
Deletewhat a gorgeous laundry room! I love that you used the stuff you already have.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a goal on the lines of a daily letter is to keep stamps and a general card or two in your glove box and send someone you are thinking of a note that very day
Thank you! I think it's cute, and it'e definitely more functional than what I was living with before.
DeleteAs for having stamps and cards on hand, that is a really good idea. I'll have to keep that in mind if/when I try this again in the future.
This month I worked on no caffeine (coffee/sodas) and extra veggies with each meal. The no-caf plan worked out, but after half a month I dropped the ball with the veggies. A final exam schedule (snacking subconsciously while studying) may have contributed to that. I'll keep trying this month, and I have a new goal as well: to take a picture every day of May. It shouldn't be too hard :) Charleston is a very photogenic location, especially in summer. Thanks for the tips, Kelli!
ReplyDeleteHey, good job with the caffeine! That one can be especially difficult in the beginning. I'm totally with you as far as snacking is concerned. It's too easy to get into that habit. good luck with your May goals!
DeleteThis month, I've resolved to read ten books, learn three new songs on the guitar, and sketch more. I tend to spend too much time on the computer, and my creative abilities suffer from it :P
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Jessica @ Diary of a Beautiful Soul
Those sound like great creative goals. I wish I could read ten books in a month! I can read pretty fast, but the problem is that I get completely sucked into whatever I'm reading. My responsibilities and relationships suffer as a result. Good luck!
DeleteI am a big proponent of handwritten letters, but they are not always quick and easy to write. I suggest that you still try a letter goal, but make it more flexible--two letters per week, for example. That way, if you miss one day, you can still make it up. Also, buy stamps you really like. There are a lot of fun ones at the post office. Right now I have Pixar, the Merchant Marine (I like ships), and Pioneers of American Industrial Design. Pick something you can smile about when you stick the stamp on your letter. Also, find a writing utensil and stationery you like.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the laundry room!
As far as my April goals:
a. Decide what to do with Bible reading: Grade: B. I decided on something, but it is even more time-consuming and harder than what I did before, so I haven't been great at implementing it.
b. Get more healthy; develop healthier habits: Grade: C. I put more effort into my lunches at work now, and have become a bit more moderate in general, but otherwise have not made a lot of progress.
c. Organize my writings/documents/movies: Grade: C-. I started organizing but have not gone far.
But I get the bonus of completing The Silmarillion, which was a 2012 goal. :-) I actually found it one of the most spiritually aware books that I've read recently. Also, because of its writing style and themes, reading The Silmarillion makes reading the Bible a lot easier.
That's a great idea. I think I could keep up with 2 letters/week! One letter per day was much too overwhelming. I try to be sincere and put a lot of thought into my letters so it's kind of emotionally draining. However, twice a week.. that, I think I could handle.
DeleteGood job completing The Silmarillion! That book is on my to-read list. I've never even picked it up. But I have a few friends who are obsessed with it, so I figure I should give it a try!
Thank you for sharing your "report card" with me!
That's funny.... I've been trying to write more letters lately too! :)
ReplyDeleteThese are GREAT goals... I'm so happy you got them accomplished!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI empathize, I am a total procrastinator-under-stress type.
What has actually {suprisingly} kept me focused on eating healthier is something my mom found, "T-Tapp". It's a lot of excercising mostly, but they ALSO give you a food plan that REALLY WORKS!!
The author talked about how a lot of people when they try to adjust their eating habits just jump right in and go straight to "healthy". However, of you're like me, you crave. Like, toss-me-the-hamburger-and-pop type crave. So {she's genius!} she came up with a plan: For two days straight, eat only "God-made" foods. Anything that can be harvested, picked, killed, milked, etc. No processed foods! (No sugar either... But honey passes.) And only whole grains.
Then, after two days, "Man-made" foods. This is where the pops and hamburgers and brownies come in.
(Repeat.)
After you got this down, lengthen the two days to four.
When you got this down you could even make it so you only have one "Man-made" day a week, or none at all!
(Also, we learned that it helps to drink LOTS of water, half your body weight!)
I have only been on it for a little bit, but already I am feeling better (which is really the reason for doing this), plus I feel so much more focused and headache-free.
Anyways, it worked for us! :)

PS... You could probably find her book at your local library. :)
That sounds reeeeally intriguing... I will have to check the library and perhaps I will add it to my reading list this month. Thanks for the tip!
DeleteI've been trying to orgaize my laundry room. But the day I decided to do that (and finish all the laundry) the boiler (which was right next to the laundry room) caught on fire and destroyed that room and part of the kitchen...not sure if I should laugh or cry.:(
ReplyDeleteOh no!! I hope it wasn't too serious, and I hope the repair goes well. I'm sorry that happened..
DeleteWell, our basement was kaput (the foundation was almost completly destroyed) and the kitchen and laundry room were really bad too. Thankfully, insurance is covering all the repairs and all the clothes we lost...*sniffle* I lost my favorite summer dress. :( But everyone is A-okay and we didn't lose anything of significant importance...except for our boiler...and our washing machine...and our oven...and...
DeleteI should really start something like this my self i am the queen of procrastination. Making my may resolutions right now :) Thanks Kelli
