15 Right Now...

...I just made a killer bowl of egg salad. I know that egg salad isn't everybody's "thing," but I've been craving it for weeks, so today I stifled that craving. I wish I had some greek yogurt to use instead of mayo.. It's definitely time for a grocery trip in the Taylor household, so mayo must suffice. We're also out of nut butters, carrot juice, spinach, eggs, and bread. (Thanks to Mrs. Snyder, we won't need veggies anytime soon!) Honestly, I'm conflicted about the bread part - we usually don't have it in the house at all, but since I just made egg salad, I'm wishing I could eat it with a piece of toast. Maybe I'll grab a loaf of Ezekiel Bread in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I'm shoveling forkfuls of the eggy goodness into my face. No shame.

...Josh is at his family's house to work out some business details with his dad. The house is not only empty (and quiet!), it's a complete mess. Booo. Usually I do my best cleaning and organizing when I'm on my own, and I'd planned to get things done while he was out, but I just can't seem to find the motivation today.

...I'm still recovering from the weekend. We've been staying up wayyy too late recently, and as someone who needs more sleep than the average person, the lack of sleep is messing with my days and my energy level. That's probably why I can't seem to get anything done!

...It's raining. Another sign to curl up with a book and ignore my responsibilities! Haha - can you guys tell that I'm trying reeeeeally hard to justify my procrastination?

...Speaking of procrastination, I'm behind on replying to emails and comments. If you've tried to get in touch with me and I haven't responded yet, I'm sorry. I promise I'll get to each of you as soon as I can :)

...OKAY I'm gonna get moving now. Wish me luck! I'd like to have the house at least semi-tidy by the time Josh gets home. I know he would appreciate that.

What do you do when you can't find the motivation to fulfill your responsibilities? Any tips for an amateur like myself?

  1. Oh dear. I suffer from procrastination too, and it doesn't help that I work best under pressure...
But...I use sticky notes like nobody's business. I write my list on one of those because just seeing how small the sticky note is makes everything feel more manageable. I also then tell myself to just do at least one thing (the easiest thing) in the next hour. That's how I get started.

    1. Working best under pressure - that's how I am too! It only feeds the procrastination monster when at the end of the day I can get it done well even after procrastination haha. I like the "do at least one thing in the next hour." That sounds like something that could work for me.

  2. I was like that today too! I was going to get at least one errand done, but I didn't because I didn't want to leave the house in the rain. So, I spent most of the morning watching TV. I have to tell myself to stop watching TV and find something else to do....because I could sit/lay around all day and do nothing if I let myself.

I like the post it idea-I might have to try that!

    1. Yeah for some reason the rain was super demotivating on Tuesday. Even more so than rain usually is!

  3. I can't quite sympathize about the egg salad (though wanting bread I can sympathize with), but I do know that feeling of having so much to do yet not being motivated enough to do it! When you asked what we do when we feel like that, I felt ashamed that my truthful answer would be waste time on the internet!

But sometimes I am indeed able to conquer such problems, so I guess I could say that at the best of times I am able to make myself get up and do something. Often an audiobook will encourage me with cleaning. I tend to clean up for longer stretches if I have a good audiobook or music to listen to. Also a little physical exercise can actually make me feel really good and better able to face tasks and challenges. A shower can also get me a fresh start—invigorating! The power of water and fresh cleanness is hard to surpass at times.

    1. An audiobook! Of course! I ended up turning on a television program (that didn't require all of my attention) for background noise. Following a narrative while I'm finishing unpleasant tasks helps me get them done quicker. Next time I'll pop on an audiobook or better yet, an episode of Adventures in Odyssey! Thanks for that!

  4. I lOVE egg salad. Best thing; pretty much a main staple during the summer months.
Really what helps me is motivation. Aka: "If I clean the whole house, then I'll feel okay with watching like 2+ hours of video." Like the reward factor, ya know?

    1. YES a fellow egg lover! :) I already want to make more ow that we're out.

"Reward factor," that's good. That's how I usually motivate myself to get things done. "After I finish cleaning the kitchen, I can watch this week's episode of Once Upon A Time."

I've never heard of Hank the Cowdog! That's an intriguing name... I'll have to see if my library has any of them on CD.

P.S. I like your blog! Looks like you just got started but what you have is cute!

  5. Looking now at Asta's comment... totally agree! If there's like a book on tape or CD series (Adventures in Odessy... have you heard of Hank the Cowdog? Fav around here) then it helps cleaning go by more swiftly.

    Hope it helps!

  6. Music is my answer for just about everything. It sets the mood. When I want to chill and read a book, classical piano. When it is time to clean nothing gets me moving like Journey, 80's classics or anything with a good beat. To add to that though, it must be loud. When I'm bopping around the house I want music that I can hear from just about anywhere. This does make it hard for me to hear my children now and then, but it does get me motivated. I don't mean for this to sound like I have it all together. I have my down days as well, and yesterday was one of them. I'm not the perfect homemaker, but I do try and with homeschooling four children, one of them being special needs, I think I do a good job. My other secret is to make a list.

    1. It sounds like you have your hands really full! The main problem with blasting music is that I live in a town home with thin walls. I suppose I could wear an iPod to fix that! And yeah, I write lists all the time! It helps me wrap my head around what needs to be done.

  7. I write lists. I have this obsession with checking things off a list, it is such a beautiful feeling! It also helps be to sort out what I really need to get done.I don't know what helps you but I'm a lists girl :)

  8. Like some of the other people, lists are my best friend. I use it to keep track of my daily school assignments. Also when I need to clean, I crank up some music and it's done really fast. Often I forget about something I have to do until last minute and my brain thankfully remembers it and saves me :)
